Kids are amazing but they aren’t the cleanest creatures.  Check out these ideas for getting your minions involved with even the most mundane task.

-Jam out! For younger children, create a clean-up song going over each step of the cleaning process to a rhythm.  For older kids, turn on a mix of their music and stuff from back in the day.  Use it as a chance to bond and embarrass yourself on the high notes while getting chores done.

-Break it down. A large mess can be overwhelming, so break it down into smaller manageable tasks.  Start with picking up all of the books or an item of certain colors or materials until the space is completely picked up.

-Make it competitive.  For a single child, have them beat the clock on a task completion.  For multiple kids, have them race against each other to see how fast a task can be completed or who can clean up the most of something.  Reward with an extra special snack or picking out the next meal for lunch or dinner.  It also turns into a lesson on time management.

-Create a reward chart. For younger children, stickers are a great visual to see how far they have to go before they receive a reward.  For older kids, create a visual “bank account” where they can see how much money they’ve earned and how much they’ve deducted for rewards.  They can also see how much various task “pay”, which creates an incentive for even the worst of chores and house hold tasks.

-Show them how it’s done.  Younger children may not understand how or what you want done so do a couple repetitions and have them do them right back to you to demonstrate how you want the task completed.

-Have everyone do tasks. Set a timer where everyone stops and cleans for a set mount of time.  It gets the whole family involved and breaks down time into smaller increments of work time.

-Go into the science of germs.  Explain how if things aren’t cleaned how germs are spread.  Explain the importance of hygiene and a clean environment.  Explaining the cause and effect of cleaning can go a long way.
